Twelfth Annual Alternative Investment Survey by DB: Bullish on investment industry

Hi all, Deutsche Bank recent released its Twelfth Annual Alternative Investment Survey:  Alternative Investment Survey
  • Investors remain bullish on industry growth – hedge funds are expected to reach a record breaking $3 trillion by year end 2014, up from $2.6tn as of 2013 year end.  This is based on investors’ predictions of $171 billion net inflows and performance-related gains of 7.3% (representing $191 billion)
  • Commitment from institutional investors continues to strengthen – nearly half of institutional investors increased their hedge fund allocations in 2013, and 57% plan to grow their allocations in 2014. Institutional investors now account for two thirds of industry assets, compared to approximately one third pre-crisis
  • Investors are happy with hedge fund performance – 80% of respondents state that hedge funds performed as expected or better in 2013, after their allocations returned a weighted average of 9.3% in 2013.  63% of respondents, and 79% of institutional investors, are targeting returns of less than 10% for their hedge fund portfolios in 2014.  Equity long short and event driven are the most sought after strategies.
  • 2 & 20 is not the norm – Investors today pay an average management fee of 1.7%, and an average performance fee of 18.2%.  While fees have come down slightly, investors remain willing to pay for performance:  almost half of all investors would allocate to a manager with fees in excess of 2&20 where the manager has proven ‘consistent strong performance in absolute terms’.
  • A bigger part of a bigger pie – hedge funds get reclassified.  39% of investors are now embracing a risk-based approach to asset allocation, up from 25% in 2013.
My summary of the survey findings/ main data categories are attached in PDF (Deutsche Twelfth Annual AI Survey)….and more newsflow on Hedge funds below.
Regards,
Yoman

Pitch a Stock to Win a Referral into the Front Office! – SpringBoard TM

Now is the window to get hired at the front office!

In our last mailer, we talked about the hiring door being wide open. This is the BEST window of opportunity for people without relevant experience to do career switch. It will NOT be easy, as there are always many applicants with more relevant experience than you.

For example, our recent referral to a global bank seeking ONE research associate had the Head of Research look at some 50 candidates, all sourced privately. Otherwise, the Head of Research would be overwhelmed, screening hundreds of CVs. The key to successful career switch hence lies in our slogan “Continue Learning and Keep On Networking”.

SpringBoard-Kairos Research Challenge – Your Opportunity to Get Hired!

In this light, SpringBoard TM has formed an exclusive network with Kairos – an investment club of buy-side and sell-side analysts – to run regular Stock Pitch competitions.

At the competition:
· Contestants pitch a BUY idea over 7 min, followed by a 10 – 15 min Q&A by our panel of judges. Through this exercise, participants not only get a good sense of interview questions commonly asked by hiring managers, but also improve on their investment acumen.
· Feedback is provided at the end of the session to let participants know how they can do better.
· Prize: Special guests (typically hiring managers) are invited to our event to watch our contestants LIVE in action. The winner of the competition will be granted a private chat with the special guest(s), while contestants may be approached if they are found suitable for any opportunity.

Past competitions were organised internally for SpringBoard interns, where the winners were subsequently hooked up with prospective employers. For the coming competition, we wish to open it up to more aspiring candidates looking for a career switch.

Event Details

Date / Time: Sat 26 Apr 2014 at 10AM
Venue: a convenient location to be disclosed later
Participation fee: $249 [2 tickets only]
Reply NOW to springboard@scholarsvillage.com, detailed competition rules will be furnished to participants only

Registration closes on 31 Mar 2014, as contestants are given adequate time to prepare an investment summary and slide presentation.

If you do not wish to participate in the competition, but wish to observe our contestants and judges in action, observer tickets are available at $499 per pax.

SpringBoard TM referred Andy a job and his employer now wants more!

Hiring Window opens as we predicted

In the last 1- 2months, we have seen the hiring window open, as we rightly predicted few months ago. “Musical chairs rotation” is in full swing, post bonus payout, as many SpringBoard friends resigned to move to other banks; while many SpringBoard interns – despite having zero relevant working experience- are going for multiple interviews lately.

Most importantly, SpringBoard is swarmed with multiple requests from employers to feed them with suitable candidates

Here, we wish to share a recent success story from our referral in Aug 2013, how the employer is so pleased with our referral that they have come back asking for more!

Andy joined a family office via SpringBoard referral

Andy came to know about us at CFA Xmas party in 2012 and regularly attended our networking/ knowledge sharing events. He saw value in our Mentorship platform and signed up for our Foundation stage in April 2013, was placed in the good hands of our star mentor Jessie– a PE fund manager. His positive learning attitude, humility and good quality of work won praises from Jessie, and upon our encouragement, he progressed to Advanced stage within 2mths, where he was given more learning opportunities.

His path was not all smooth-sailing, and many of his job applications failed to get any response from employers. He was however undeterred and continued to put in more effort on the assignments from SpringBoard. In our first Research Challenge- stock pitch competition in Dec 2013, Andy came in runner up, and was commended to be one of the better presenters by our special guest, who was in the process of launching his fund. Andy was also awarded CFA charter few months ago.

Through our private contacts, we sent Andy to an interview with a family office with strong financial backing. He conducted himself very well at the interview, and impressed the hiring manager with his good industry knowledge and nice samples of the work he did for Yoman and Jessie. Thereafter, he was interviewed a few times by the other key partners of the family office, and given trial assignments to complete, as part of the live work done by the family office. Finally, after numerous months of “courtship” on both sides, Andy has started work with the family office full-time. We are all very happy for him and wish him all the best in his new role.

Andy’s employer now needs a consumer analyst

Requirements:
-> Good foundation in financial analysis;
-> Sound industry knowledge, prefers somebody who has worked in Consumer company before, to properly understand a sound business model for Consumer company
-> Hungry to learn

Interested to reply with job code: SB2014A

If you are passionate about this opportunity, please send us:
(1) your CV- preferably within 1 page; and
(2) a short investment summary- up to 4 pages- of a consumer stock you have looked at previously, for our SpringBoard mentors to gauge your understanding of a consumer company.

Please send us your application ASAP. Your reply email to springboard@scholarsvillage.com should include the job code SB2014A in the subject.

We will only refer candidates whom we find suitable.

If you narrowly miss the mark, don’t feel too bad. As an encouragement for your good effort, you could stand a chance to win a special scholarship to attend our coming Investment Banking Masterclass (worth $299)

Terms and conditions apply.
