Pitch Your Stock Pick to a Prospective Employer

SpringBoard is organizing Season 4 of its equity research competition and is now open for registration by the public.

Who should participate?
You are welcome to participate if you would like to:
– Showcase your investment ideas to veterans from the investment community and get feedback;
– Improve your interview skills for front office roles;
– Experience first-hand the challenges faced by equity analysts; or
– Be hired potentially by hiring managers attending the event

What do you need to do in our competition?
– You are given a few weeks to come up with a stock pick according to our rules and guidelines, and prepare a 4-page investment report.
– You are given no more than 7 min to pitch your idea, followed by a 10 min Q&A with our panel of judges. Through this exercise, you will not only get a good sense of interview questions commonly asked by hiring managers, but also improve on your investment acumen through interaction with industry veterans. Feedback will be provided at the end of the session to let participants know how they can do better.
– Prize: Special guests (typically hiring managers) are invited to our event to watch our contestants LIVE in action. The winner of the competition will be granted a private chat with the special guest(s), while contestants may also be approached if they are found suitable for any opportunity.

Winners and other outstanding contestants from previous competitions had been approached by our special guests, and they are now successful, either working in the front office or close to firming contracts with prospective employers. Financial Modeling Classroom Season 3 Commencing 12 Jul

Dear SpringBoard Friends,

SpringBoard TM is commencing Financial Modeling Classroom Season 3 from 12 Jul for 5 weekly intensive Saturday sessions. The mentor is Val, a former sell-side analyst with several years’ experience at large international banks. She will cover the fundamentals of building a functional financial model, from generating ideas to data crunching and determining a fair value. Each session generally ends with a work assignment due at noon the following Friday.

What you should expect: You will improve on your technical skills required of a financial analyst, which will enhance your employability in a front office role. Several of our students have attended interviews for front office roles since participating in the program.

You will stand a chance to advance to the Internship Program if you show passion and skills in your participation and assignments. The 6-month Internship Program is designed to help you gain entry into a front office career, featuring possible referrals to job opportunities suitable for you.

What SpringBoard expects: Students should be seeking or exploring a career in the finance front office; and possess financial knowledge and skills equivalent to a finance/accounting degree or CFA Level 1, in particular financial statements. Bloomberg skills are a plus.

What background our mentor possesses:
Val has more than 5 years of industry experience. She has been a sell-side analyst at 2 international banks for several years. In between, she worked as an analyst in an investment strategy team for a big British bank. She started life as a research analyst with a boutique fund, helping the chief investment officer analyze companies for IPO deals. She completed her CFA exams in three consecutive years.

Kairos Research Challenge 2014 Season 3 Opens

Dear Springboard interns,

I wish to inform you that the third season of Kairos Research Challenge for year 2014 kicks off and registration opens on 20 May (linked here). We continue evolving our research competition season after season. Updated rules and guidelines are attached for your reference. We will also provide a research report template for you to follow whereby you are required to fill up certain financials of your company. Lastly a quick checklist is provided for you to do a quick check before you submit your report to us.

In this season, you are required to find an excellent SHORT idea with more than 20% downside. We have also modified our rules such that you should only pick those liquid stocks with market cap above US$500m and liquidity of at least US$5m average value traded over the past one month. Our comprehensive rules and guidelines provides you the exact procedure with which you could check if your pick is qualified.

We also make it a requirement for you to call up company, and/or company’s competitor to find out more to facilitate your thesis. There will be demerit of 20 points if you fail to do so.

From this season onward, we are also providing a research report template. Please find it in attachment. You are free to modify the name of the section however the font and spacing in the template should be retained.

IMPORTANT NOTES: I would like to extract a few items from our rules and guidelines for you to take note:

1) Research summary to be strictly NO LONGER than 4 pages, exclusive of financial details and Q&As at the back of the report, and to be submitted by 12:00PM of July 3rd. Detailed guideline can be found in the attachment. We will only print four pages from your investment summary body for our judges.

2) Presentation to be strictly NO LONGER than 7 minutes. We will cut your presentation off right at 7 min, before when we will update you the time lapsed during your presentation.

3) We provided great depth of guideline for your investment summary and presentation. Please spend time reading our attachment.

4) Please take note of the following important dates:

  • On May 18th 2014: Research competition guideline, restriction of stock pick, and research report template to be distributed to SpringboardTM’s advanced track intern. Followed by publicity for public registration.
  • By June 5th 2014: Participant to respond to email springboard@scholarsvillage.com his/her stock pick
  • By 12:00PM on July 3rd 2014 (Thursday): Participant to email springboard@scholarsvillage.com his/her research report, limited to 4 pages.
  • On July 5th 2014 (Saturday): 7 min presentation by participants, followed by Q&A

Seminar: Interview Pitfalls on 30 May – Early Bird Ends 19 May

Dear SpringBoard Friend,

SpringBoard TM invites you to “the Interview Pitfalls” – its inaugural interview skills seminar, to be helmed by fund manager Yoman and experienced mutual fund analyst Ruishan. Both speakers have had personal in-depth experience dealing with front office hiring managers, both on and off the SpringBoard platform.

Initially reserved for a select group of SpringBoard interns, it is now open to SpringBoard friends who want to overcome the interview hurdle towards securing a front office career. Hence, you have to pay if you are not a SpringBoard intern.

What you should expect: You will improve on your next interview performance from the Interview Pitfalls, as SpringBoard shares case studies of how SpringBoard interns have impressed or disappointed our employer partners.

What SpringBoard expects: More work, more learn and gain. Pls come with questions about interviews you attended or are attending, to benefit from the seminar.

How the event should flow:
1900 – 1930: Ruishan shares about interview techniques and skills on how to handle the interview, including common mistakes made by interviewees
1930 – 2000: Yoman provides insight into how employers assess interviewees. including employers’ feedback on their experiences with interviewees, in particular those from SpringBoard TM
2000 – 2030: You pose questions to the speakers in the Q&A session and benefit immensely from the seminar.
